Iran’s top security official warns Azeri president against ‘costly traps’

Secretary of Iran’ Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani reacted to the latest anti-Iran allegations made by the president of Azerbaijan, warning him against making “unrealistic” statements.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in an address to the Commonwealth of Independent States’ Summit on Friday accused Iran and Armenia of using Karabakh territory for trafficking illegal drugs for decades.

"Ignoring the principles and requirements of the neighborliness and making false and unconstructive statements are not indicative of good will and wisdom," Shamkhani wrote in a post on his Twitter account on Friday.

"Accusing a country that is recognized by the international community as a hero of the fight against narcotic drugs has no effect but discrediting the speaker," he added warning the Azeri president, “Be careful of costly traps laid by devils.”

Also reacting to Aliyev's accusations, the spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly rejected the new surprising allegations earlier on Friday, calling them as “fabricated.”

Saeed Khatibzadeh said Aliyev’s accusations are only in line with the interests of the Israeli regime and in order to affect the fraternal relations between the two nations of Iran and Azerbaijan.

In a virtual meeting with the CIS leaders, Aliev claimed in an unrealistic statement that Armenia, in collusion with Iran, used the former occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan to smuggle drugs into Europe for about 30 years.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also rejected these allegations and stressed Iran-Armenia cooperation in fighting against narcotic drugs, Mehr News Agency wrote.
