Tehran’s Daily Newspaper Review
The 13th of Aban is a day to remember in Iranian contemporary history: it is the day on which the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi, exiled his nemesis Ayatollah Khomeini to Iraq, the day on which commandos of the Pahlavi monarchy killed university student demonstrators at the height of the Islamic Revolution, and perhaps most important of all, the day on which young pro-Revolution leftist students occupied the American embassy in Tehran and took U.S. diplomats hostage—a move which led to an as yet unresolved and bitter struggle between Iran and the United States. Last year’s anniversary of the 13th of Aban in Tehran was the most unorthodox in years, when Green protestors were scattered around the former U.S. embassy shouting ‘Death to Russia’, and ‘The Russian Embassy, is the Den of Espionage’ (Den of Espionage being the name given to the U.S. embassy after its seizure).
