(1)   Drinking the ‘poison hemlock’ was the metaphor used by late Ayatollah Khomeini when he accepted UN Resolution 598 to put an end to the eight-year war with Iraq.

(2)   Ali Karimi, 31-year old footballer and former midfielder of German soccer giant Bayern Munchen is known as ‘magician’ in Iran’s football due to his exceptional skills with the ball. Manager of the national soccer team, the Iranian-American Afshin Qotbi, is known as ‘The Emperor’ among Iranian soccer fans.

(3)   Nezam (literally meaning ‘system’) is synonymous to ‘the Islamic Republic’ in Iranian political discourse. It is mostly used by insider politicians, or those who were once known as insiders (such as the self-exiled Reformists). The opposition to the Islamic Republic prefers to use rezheem (regime) which assigns it a negative connotation.
