Lakhdar Brahimi to travel to Tehran
(MNA) – Lakhdar Brahimi, the new United Nations and Arab League envoy on Syria, plans to travel to Tehran after a trip to Damascus, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs announced on Sunday.
“The United Nations envoy on Syria plans to visit Tehran at a proper time after a visit to Syria,” Abbas Araqchi told the Mehr News Agency.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi held a phone conversation with Brahimi late on Sunday.
Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary general, traveled to Tehran twice while he served as the UN envoy on Syria.
Annan announced his resignation in August after six months of trying to get the warring sides in Syria, and their outside backers, to find a negotiated settlement out of the crisis.
Syria has declared its readiness to cooperate with Brahimi.
