Tehran’s Daily Newspaper Review
Newspapers downplayed the demonstrations held yesterday by the Green Movement in Tehran and some other major cities. Iran Daily reported a routine day in Tehran in the afternoon. Kayhan called it a failed “Zionist project” and Resalat called yesterday “the nadir of despair” for Fetneh. The more moderate Tehran-e Emrooz reported the full rebuff of Tehran citizens of the calls for demonstration and the ordinary flow of the Internet as signs of failure of the protests. Today, the Iranian Majles witnessed unprecedented chants of “Death to Khatami”, “Death to Karrubi” and “Death to Mousavi” by MPs apparently infuriated by yesterday’s events.
In the wake of the increasingly close relations of their countries, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul made a crucial agreement in Tehran yesterday to raise the level of commercial transactions to 30 billion dollars, from the present figure of 10 billion. Protests in Yemen and Bahrain also caught the attention of Iranian newspapers, with Kayhan speaking of the Islamic wave prevailing over Bahrain and Yemen, and Vatan-e Emrooz speaking of revolutionaries calling for Palestine’s liberation.
