A new sweetening plant in Iran’s South Pars gas field has increased its production to 70 million cubic meters of gas.

According to IRNA, phase 12 of the field has seen the establishment of the fifth sweetening train which enables the refinery to produce more than 70 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas per day.

Rassoul Fallah Nejad, the phase 12 contractor, said however that the refinery is yet to reach the full capacity in production mainly due to the shortage in feedstock.

The current production of the unit stands at 55 to 60 mcm while a sixth sweetening train will be on stream in February, he added.

South Pars Phase 12 is the biggest phase in the giant offshore gas field. The Platform 12B of the gas field is expected to hit 500 million cubic feet per day soon.

South Pars covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

The gas field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.
