(FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham termed the recent presidential election in Ukraine as a positive step towards the restoration of peace, stability and security in that country.

"Iran hopes that the election of the new president in Ukraine will end political crisis and establish tranquility and national understanding in the country," Afkham told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday.

Petro Poroshenko, 48 years old, a business tycoon was elected as new Ukraine president on Sunday.

After Poroshenko claimed victory in the election, he has vowed to negotiate a peaceful end to the insurgency.

Poroshenko, who has not yet been sworn in, pending official confirmation of the results, said his first step as president would be to visit the troubled east. He said he hoped Russia would support his efforts to bring stability, and that he wanted to hold talks with Moscow.

Russian has congratulated his victory, but warned that internal disputes should be resolved through talks and diplomacy with dissidents and not through the ongoing military operation in Eastern Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stressed that Moscow is ready for talks with Poroshenko.
