(FNA)- The Syrian army is preparing for large-scale operations to regain control of a strategic military airport in the Eastern countryside of Aleppo.

According to FNA reports, the army units are moving towards Kowaires airport after they purged the terrorists from the nearby Al-Safira town.

Seizure of Al-Safira town paves the way for the army’s advance towards the Kowaires military airport.

Army sources said that the operation for taking back the Kowaires airport will be staged in several phases.

"The first phase of operations will include besieging the terrorists and blocking the logistics routes to them," they said.

"Taking back the town of Al-Safira from the militant troops is a great military victory for the Syrian army, because it opens the gates of Aleppo to the Syrian troops," the sources added.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
